Let yourself be charmed by these espresso cups inspired by the sedimentary rocks on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. These pieces are as functional as they are sculptural, with a natural clay texture on the outside that contrasts with the shiny, colorful glazes on the inside, which are reminiscent of the shiny mineral found inside the broken rock.
A set of porcelain carafe and shot cups concepted over numerous visits to the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. Gotland has a rich abundance of sedimentary rocks that were deposited some 440 million years ago during the Silurian age when a warm, shallow, salty ocean covered the area. These rocks now stand as unique and unusual ancient rock formations scattered across the island’s land and shores. Not only producing a dramatic visual landscape, the rock is used extensively in the island’s building and infrastructure industry. The “Shallow and Salty Ocean” collection pays homage to the Gotland’s geographical and industrial heritage. Moulds were taken from select fragments of limestone and cast in fine porcelain, resulting in an ongoing series of vessels. The intricate stone texture and sharp, aggressive crystalline structure makes drinking with these pieces a unique experience, being as functional as they are sculptural. The monotone unglazed exterior juxtaposes the glossy, colourful interior glaze, reminiscent of a shining mineral found within a broken rock. From the ancient ocean waters that first laid the rocky deposits, the roles of these two elements have been transformed through this collection; from the ocean that was once a vessel for rock, the rock has now become a vessel for liquid.
Craig Barrow is a designer working in the areas of object and sculpture. Seeing design as a response to the world’s curiosities and shared relationships, his work is guided by material exploration, research of production processes, observations of human interaction with objects and scientific and natural phenomena. These processes, observations and findings are manipulated, imitated or reproduced to guide the final forms of his pieces. Craig takes a hands-on approach within his practice; material understanding and experimentation are a key factor, in combination with scientific and cultural research. Born in Nottingham, UK, he studied 3D Design at the University of Brighton. He now lives and works in Berlin.
